Bolts waive Mouton, place Clary on PUP list

The San Diego Chargers made a couple of roster moves as players reported for physicals Wednesday before the start of training camp.

Middle linebacker Jonas Mouton, a second-round pick in the 2011 draft, was waived with a failed physical designation by the team. Offensive guard Jeromey Clary was placed on the active physically unable to perform list.

Mouton still had issues stemming from surgery to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee that forced him to miss the 2013 season. Before that, he missed his entire rookie season with a shoulder issue. Mouton played just three games in three years with the Chargers, totaling two tackles.

Clary is rehabbing from offseason shoulder and hip surgery. Placing Clary on the PUP list gives the Chargers an opportunity to take a methodical approach toward getting the Kansas State product ready for the regular season.

Johnnie Troutman and Chris Watt will see time at right guard with the first unit with Clary unavailable.

Other possible PUP candidates who appear cleared for training camp include cornerback Jason Verrett (shoulder) and edge rusher Dwight Freeney (quad). Both players were limited participants in offseason workouts for the Chargers.

New addition cornerback Brandon Flowers will wear No. 26, and rookie running back Marion Grice will switch to No. 28.

The Chargers open training camp with morning practice Thursday beginning at 9:20 a.m. Pacific time at Chargers Park.
