27 Cambodian workers go missing in Thailand

Residents of a border-region Cambodian province fear illegal Thai job brokers may have cheated and stranded nearly 30 villagers in Thailand.

The Phnom Penh Post reported Monday that locals in Banteay Meanchey province saw a pair of Thai brokers drive two trucks into O'Chrou district illegally on Friday and convinced the 30 villagers to leave for a sugarcane plantation located about three kilometres across the border.

None of the workers have returned home, raising fears they've run into trouble, as they would be working illegally without employment permits.

The brokers claimed they would pay 250-350 baht a day plus two meals daily.

Tea Vanny, the Tonob Dach village chief, told the papers that locals go to work at the sugarcane plantation in the morning and return in the evening. However, 27 haven't been seen since Friday.

"If they are really working at the sugarcane field, it will not be a problem, but I worry that they were tricked to log timber in Thailand illegally, since in the past, many villagers have been cheated," he told the Post.
