An assortment of artworks belonging to the late David Bowie is set to be unveiled to the public for the first time, before being auctioned off for a projected £10 million (NZ$18.5 million).

The singer was an avid collector before his death in January, and his compendium of about 400 pieces of art and furniture is expected to sell for a generous figure given his legendary status.

Bowie's family say they are selling his extensive collection off at world-renowned auction house Sotheby's because they don't have the space to house it.

Bowie studied art as a schoolboy before making his foray into music, and admitted to "obsessively and addictively" accumulating art pieces for his personal collection.

The sale of Bowie's collection will take place in November this year.
