France omit Patrice Evra as Alexandre Lacazette recalled after Euro snub

Juventus defender Patrice Evra has been left of the France squad ahead of the start of their World Cup qualifying campaign next month but there were recalls for Alexandre Lacazette, Nabil Fekir and Raphael Varane.

Evra, 35, was France's starting left-back during the host country's run to the Euro 2016 final this summer.

However, France coach Didier Deschamps has chosen not to use him for a friendly against Italy on Sept. 1 and Les Bleus' opening 2018 World Cup qualifier in Belarus on Sept. 6.

Barcelona's Lucas Digne, 23, Paris Saint-Germain's Layvin Kurzawa, 23, and versatile Monaco full-back Djibril Sidibe, 24, have been picked ahead of Evra.

Speaking at a news conference on Thursday to announce his squad, Deschamps admitted that he felt the need to look at other options.

"Patrice is still at his level," Deschamps said. "But I have to plan for a World Cup which will take place in two years.

"Patrice has his age. It's up to him to maintain the level he has today.

"But it seems to me important, from the start, to be able to give game time and responsibility to younger players in order for them to toughen up and move up some levels too."

It is the first time that Evra has not been included in a France squad since November 2014. However, Deschamps insisted that it was not a case of being the end of the former Manchester United player's international career barring injuries to other defenders.

"I didn't say that," Deschamps insisted. "I said that Patrice Evra is at the level required at the moment because he played all the matches at the Euros.

"He's there at Juventus -- I know what he's capable of doing.

"The World Cup is in two years. That will mean he's two years older... in the meantime, that will allow me to see the development of other players who've already been involved.

"Lucas Digne has already come several times and Layvin has come once before too and finds himself in a situation today at his club where he's getting a lot more game time.

"So it's up to them to seize this opportunity... I think it's important as well from this first gathering to show that I'm counting on them and have confidence in them.

"After that it's up to them to respond to the demands, which are obviously higher when you're talking about the French team and international level."

Real Madrid centre-back Varane, 23, is included after being left out of the Euro 2016 squad due to injury, while Lacazette, 25, who was overlooked for the tournament, also gets a recall after scoring five goals at the start of the new Ligue 1 season.

Deschamps said the Lyon striker had earned his chance.

"Like his club, he's had a very good start to the league even if there have only been two games," Deschamps said.

"But beyond the goals that he's been able to score, in terms of the aggressiveness and combativeness, it would be very good if he might be able to maintain that over the long term.

"I haven't always seen him like that. He's always scored goals and always will. The state of mind that he's showing with his club... he'll need that at the highest level."

Deschamps said that Real Madrid forward Karim Benzema, who was also omitted from the Euro 2016 squad, was available to him but he considered it was "not the moment" for him to return.
