A massive housing development in Auckland's Northcote is expected to be announced by the Government on Friday.

It will see hundreds of brand new homes built by private developers over the next 10 years.

It's understood the land flagged for the project is currently owned by Housing New Zealand.

Finance Minister Bill English and Housing Minister Nick Smith will make the announcement, which has been kept under wraps for months.

Part of the project will see developers forced to build affordable homes in a similar partnership to those currently operating in Hobsonville and Tamaki.
