The team that designed the now-famous bright pink cycle bridge in the Auckland CBD has taken home one of the top prizes at Friday night's Architecture Awards.
The neon-pink LightPath / Canada Street Bridge, which was designed by Monk MacKenzie together with GHD, Landlab and Novare Design, took out the The John Scott Award for Public Architecture.
"The LightPath and Canada Street Bridge are fun as well as functional. It's a surprising and uplifting project that sends a message that Auckland is becoming a people-centred city," said the jury.
The jury was comprised of Christchurch architect Jasper van der Lingen, Auckland architects Megan Edwards and Michael O'Sullivan, and Melbourne-based architect Andrew Maynard.
They visited 50 shortlisted buildings from the Bay of Islands to central Otago.
RTA Studio took out the The Ted McCoy Award for Education for Te Kura Kaupapa Maori o Ngati Kahungununu o Te Wairoa, a small Māori school in Wairoa, northern Hawke's Bay.
"This is an exemplary case of architecture helping to make a difference," the jury said. "The school's architecture sends a message to its students that their community values them and has high expectations of them."
Twenty-eight buildings and structures in total were recognised at the event and were given awards for Planning and Urban Design, Heritage and Hospitality & Retail.
