Marcus Mollmann is CEO of Closetbox, which opened a Southern Nevada location last October and serves 53 markets across 38 states. The company picks up boxes and furniture from customers’ homes, then stores the items at its guarded facility. The company also delivers items back to customers’ homes and, given notice, allows clients to visit the facility to grab their possessions.

Describe your business.

Closetbox is a full-service storage company, headquartered in Denver. We provide free pickup and handle the heavy lifting to move your belongings from your home to our secure storage facilities. We inventory a customer’s items, then provide customers with a personalized dashboard so they can view their items online. From this dashboard, customers can request any or all items to be returned on-demand.

Who are your customers?

We help families who are helping their parents move in or settle into senior care. We help expectant moms who are thoughtfully preparing their first nursery. We serve people who need to store their belongings because they’ve accepted a new job. We serve young couples who are moving in together and need to store some of the excess furniture and gear. We serve members of the military who are being deployed abroad. And we work with people who are navigating life’s more difficult transitions, such as divorces or deaths in the family.

Talk about your recent expansion into Nevada.

Nevada has been on our radar for some time. Las Vegas was the obvious starting place where we knew we could immediately deliver value. Today, we serve the greater metropolitan area including Henderson, North Las Vegas and Boulder City. We plan to expand from there.

What makes Closetbox different from self-storage units?

The hardest part of storing your items is moving your boxes and heavy furniture up and down the stairs, loading the truck, hauling it across town, then lugging your stuff up and down hallways. Closetbox handles all of this for you, for no additional charge.

People who use self-storage don’t consider the costs and time spent renting a truck or hiring movers, driving across town, plus the loading and unloading.

What inspired you to develop this business model?

The idea came about when my wife Katy and I were six weeks into twins. We needed to turn our dining room into a playroom. The problem was that with a baby in each hand, Katy and I could barely open a pickle jar together. What we needed was help. We needed a neighbor or a friend, someone we could trust to help load up all our heavy dining room furniture and move it into storage.

How do you ensure your customers’ items are safe?

Our team of licensed, bonded and background-checked professionals will wrap your furniture in moving blankets so all pieces are covered, protected and safe. Your things are stored in your own sealed vault, and stacked in our warehouse, which is monitored 24/7.

Anything else you’d like to share with us?

Every customer we accept has to speak to us on the phone. We do this to help understand what we are storing and for how long so we can send the right-sized truck and be certain we have the space. A surprising output of that process is that we get a chance to understand and meet the needs of people all over the country. We are helping them make space for a new baby, move into a bigger place, join the Peace Corps, start a new business, and just begin new chapters of their lives. We get to be a part of their lives during crucial times, and we get a boost as a company from helping solve people’s problems.
