Small Nelson-based charity scoops national award for eLearning that teaches how to help abused and neglected kids

Nelson-based charity Safeguarding Children Initiative (SCI) has been recognised for its child protection eLearning, the first publicly available in New Zealand, that gives adults the tools to help vulnerable children.

The judges in the New Zealand Technology Charity Awards recognised the vital role SCI is playing reaching out to communities all over New Zealand to educate them on child abuse and neglect and what to do about it.

Because the training is free, and online, it’s accessible to all.

Several thousand people have completed the training and numbers are growing rapidly.

A recent survey of 154 e-learning participants found that more than 90 per cent agreed that when faced with a potential vulnerable child:

-They better understood the signs to look out for

-Had more confidence in reporting anything of concern

-Were in a better position to be able to intervene

-Knew what to do i.e. the steps to take

Willow Duffy, SCI General Manager and Child Protection Consultant, said: ‘We are delighted the judges from the New Zealand Charities Technology Awards recognised that our eLearning is make a real difference for all children in New Zealand. There is a desperate need for accessible child protection education, particularly for many in the children’s workforce like teachers, nurses, doctors, and social workers. We do not advertise the eLearning - growth is coming from word of mouth recommendation which is something we are very proud of.

We believe it takes a community to raise a child. We tell people, don’t think ‘What if I am wrong? Think ‘What if I am right?’ We need to get the word out there that this training is available, its free and highly regarded.’
