Turkey's benchmark stock index ends week with gains

ANKARA

Turkey's benchmark stock index closed the week up 347.44 points to close at 116,914.52 points on Friday.

Borsa Istanbul's BIST 100 index rose by 0.30 percent, compared to 116,567.08 points at Thursday's close, with a 4.7 billion Turkish lira ($1.2 billion) trade volume.

During the last trading day of the week, the benchmark index hovered between 116,495.40 points and 117,240.00 points -- while 51 shares were up, 42 were down, and seven were flat compared to the previous close.

The BIST banking index closed the day down 0.72 percent -- only one share was up, eight stocks fell, and four shares were flat among all listed lenders -- while the BIST holding index was flat with a 0.09 percent fall.

Among all sectors, the BIST mining index showed the top performance -- up 3.08 percent -- and the information technology sector was the worst performer, as its index fell by 0.73 percent.

Shares of real estate investment trust Ihlas Gayrimenkul recorded the top hike with a 13.33 percent increase while stocks of telecommunication systems integration provider Netas suffered the largest decline with a 3 percent drop.

The BIST 100's most traded listed companies were national flag carrier Turkish Airlines, gold miner Koza Altin, Ihlas Gayrimenkul, iron and steel producer Kardemir and private lender Garanti.

The U.S. dollar/Turkish lira exchange rate climbed to 3.8130 as of 5 p.m. local time (1400GMT) on Friday, versus 3.8080 at the previous close.

The EUR/TRY exchange rate was flat at 4.7170 by market close. One euro traded for 4.7170 liras at Thursday's close.

The BIST Gold Exchange index fell by 0.42 percent and the price of gold per kilogram stood at 161,750 Turkish liras ($42,407) as of 4.30 p.m. local time (1330GMT), down from 162,500 Turkish liras ($42,657) at Thursday's close.

As of 7.10 p.m. local time (1610GMT), the price of Brent oil stood at $64.59 per barrel -- hovering between $63.69 per barrel and $64.83 per barrel during the day.
