Vector funding extends reach of Auckland Writers Festival

Vector funding extends reach of Auckland Writers Festival to low decile schools

Vector is proud to support the Auckland Writers Festival Schools Programme and extend its reach to low decile schools across Auckland.

Funding from Vector has enabled students from Alfriston College, Tamaki College and Kia Aroha College to take part in the programme, now in its tenth year.

“We’re proud to provide access to the Writing the Future programme for students who might otherwise not be able to participate,” said Vector Chief Risk Officer Kate Beddoe.

“A key part of our commitment to creating a new energy future and the UN sustainable development goals is about reducing inequalities so we’re more than happy to extend this opportunity to a broader range of people.”

“It also aligns with our wider support for schools through initiatives like free classroom education about energy safety and sustainability, and helping students learn STEM skills through sponsoring the Vector EPro8 competition.”

The Schools Programme features a strong line-up of talented writers who will guide students through three days of intensive, creative workshops.

Ms Beddoe said Vector was also pleased to see NZ Poet Laureate Selina Tusitala Marsh among the writers who will be facilitating workshops.

“Selina is a facilitator on our own Pasifika Leadership Development programme so we know first-hand the power of her story telling to engage and inspire others to find their voice. We think she’ll be a fantastic guide for the students.”

Auckland Writers Festival Schools Programme Manager, Roger Christensen, said Vector’s support meant more students could attend events.

“It’s been great to see students from a wide range of schools engage with the speakers. You see them leaving sessions so inspired and fired-up with new ideas. We’re enormously grateful to all our sponsors for helping to make that happen.”
