Indonesian and Taiwanese arrivals help Airport to a record

Indonesian and Taiwanese arrivals help Auckland International Airport to a record

By Jenny Ruth

March 19 (BusinessDesk) - Auckland International Airport says the number of international passengers passing through its terminals hit a record in January, largely reflecting additional airline capacity from Indonesia and Taiwan.

International passenger numbers appear set to increase further because Air Canada has announced it will begin a seasonal four-weekly service between Auckland and Vancouver from Dec. 12 this year.

The 1,068,922 international passengers in January compared with 1,023,798 in January last year, a 4.4 percent increase, although transit movements of 98,804 were down 5.5 percent.

The airport says the new service to Chicago drove capacity increases of 7,000 seats on the North America route.

Chinese visitor arrivals also rose 9 percent in January, reflecting the earlier timing of the Chinese New Year in early February.

New Zealanders arriving back home were the single largest category at 261,690 people, up 1.5 percent.

Domestic passengers increased 4.8 percent to 781,955 in the month.

International aircraft movements in January were 2.8 percent higher at 5,449 than in the same month a year earlier while domestic aircraft movements fell 6.1 percent to 9,126.

Australians topped the numbers of foreigners arriving at the airport, up 5.3 percent to 79,879 from January last year, followed by a 9 percent increase to 36,137 people from the People’s Republic of China. Americans accounted for the third largest number of arrivals at 30,641 with Brits in fourth place at 28,527.
