Bauer Media lauded for design & journalism excellence

Bauer Media’s editorial teams took to the blue carpet at the Voyager Media Awards on Friday, May 17, winning in four categories and coming runner-up in two.

The spotlight was on the art directors, with North & South’s Jenny Nicholls recognised for her bold and innovative cover designs, narrowly beating Home to take out the title of best cover for 2019. Home held its own in the best magazine design category with the judges agreeing that it deserved first place due to the “design template that is elegantly understated and yet full of well-considered detail.”*

Two writers for New Zealand Listener were jointly named Reviewer of the Year. Charlotte Grimshaw and Diana Wichtel were chosen for their humour and charm, as well as their ability to talk about dense subjects in a way that engages the everyday reader.

Michelle Langstone’s piece, ‘In a Scorched Room’ for North & South won her first place in the best first-person essay or feature category. A tough category with fierce competition, the judges felt that Langstone “had the edge with a moving and beautifully written account of how working at a bird sanctuary helped her deal with severe anxiety.”*

“It’s great to see Bauer Media’s brands being recognised not only for their journalistic integrity, but the highly skilled visual storytelling that is a huge part of the magazine and digital formats,” says managing director, Brendon Hill.

“The sheer amount of hard work and detail that goes into telling the important stories to New Zealanders and presenting them in a way which does justice to the quality of writing – this is something we are hugely proud of achieving at Bauer.”
